Baked Mostaccioli

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound mostaccioli pasta
  • 1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 jar (24 ounces) marinara sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded provolone cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish

Instructions:

Cooking the Pasta
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook the mostaccioli pasta according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
Preparing the Sauce
  1. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the Italian sausage to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned and cooked through.
  3. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the sausage, and cook until the onion is soft and translucent.
  4. Stir in the marinara sauce, diced tomatoes, dried oregano, dried basil, crushed red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5-7 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
